Abortion Pill Reversal: What is it? How It Works, and What to Know

In recent years, more women have asked an urgent question after beginning a chemical abortion: Is it possible to reverse it? This is where the concept of abortion pill reversal (APR) comes into the conversation. This topic isn’t widely talked about. It’s important to know what options may be available.

What Is the Abortion Pill?

A chemical abortion typically involves two drugs:

  • The first blocks progesterone, a hormone needed to sustain pregnancy
  • The Second, taken later, causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy

The process usually occurs within the first 10–11 weeks of pregnancy. (do we need this sentence?  Is there something else we should say about it)

What Is Abortion Pill Reversal (APR)?

Abortion pill reversal refers to a medical protocol aimed at counteracting the effects of the first pill if a woman changes her mind after taking it—but before taking the second pill.

The approach involves giving progesterone, a naturally occurring hormone that supports pregnancy.

How it Works

  • The first pill works by blocking progesterone receptors, which can weaken the uterine lining and disrupt the pregnancy. It works like a false key. It fits into the keyhole (receptor), but it does not activate it. The key goes in and out of the keyhole (receptor).
  • APR attempts to reintroduce progesterone in higher amounts. This lines up more good keys so when the bad key comes out of the keyhole (receptor), the good key goes into the receptor and works to help the pregnancy continue to grow.
  • Treatment is usually started as soon as possible after taking the first pill—ideally within 24–72 hours

Progesterone has been used for decades in obstetrics for other purposes, such as supporting early pregnancy in women at risk of miscarriage.

Is It Safe?

Progesterone itself has a long history of use in pregnancy and is generally considered safe when prescribed appropriately.

Progesterone does not increase the risk of birth defects. It is given either orally or intramuscular. It has a 64-68% success rate if started within 72 hours of taking the first pill.

Anyone considering APR should seek immediate medical care to be evaluated and monitored. The Pregnancy Care Center of Wayne County is a APR consulting clinic.

5 MYTHS of the Abortion Pill Reversal

  • It is not possible to reverse an abortion once it is started
  • Embryo survival rates after abortion pill reversal are no different than placebo
  • Abortion Pill Reversal is based upon junk science
  • Abortion Pill Reversal is unsafe
  • Abortion Pill Reversal may increase risk of birth defects

Timing Matters

APR is only considered in a very specific window:

  • After taking the first pill
  • Before taking the second pill
  • The sooner treatment begins, the more likely the reversal is to be successful.

Emotional and Practical Considerations

It’s not uncommon for women to feel uncertain or change their minds after starting a chemical abortion. That moment can feel overwhelming, urgent, and isolating.

If someone is in that situation, the most important steps are:

  • Act quickly
  • Contact a medical professional immediately. We can help!  Text or call the PCC at 330-264-5880.
  • Get accurate, up-to-date information
  • If you or someone you know is considering APR, the best course of action is to speak directly with a qualified healthcare provider as soon as possible to understand the available options.
